Adopt a Star and Support the Shiras Planetarium!

Become part of our vision to illuminate the cosmos and inspire the next generation by making a donation to the Shiras Planetarium Projector Project through the Marquette Education Foundation. Your contribution directly supports the upgrades and enhancements that will expand our planetarium’s reach, making science and exploration accessible to all.

How It Works

  1. Make a Donation: Visit the MAPS Education Foundation’s donation page, select the “Shiras Planetarium Projector Fund“ as your donation purpose, and choose the amount you wish to give to the projector project.
  2. Monthly Updates: On the 1st of each month, the Education Foundation will notify us of donations received, and we will reach out to donors who contributed that month.
  3. Choose Your Star: After being notified, you will receive a form via email where you can select a star from within the tier corresponding to your donation level. Each tier offers a unique selection of stars as described below.
  4. Receive Your Certificate: Once your star selection is complete, we’ll send you a digital certificate of appreciation to commemorate your contribution. Some tiers also come with additional recognition and exclusive benefits.
Online donations are processed with Stripe and are assessed a small transaction fee. Thank you for understanding.

Alternatively, checks may be written to “MAPS Education Foundation” with “Friends of Shiras Planetarium” listed as the memo line. Completed checks may be mailed to: P.O. Box 714, Marquette, MI 49855. All contributions are tax deductible under the laws governing 501(c)(3) organizations.

Adopt a Star Program Facts & Guidelines

  1. Not a Real Star Purchase: This program does not involve the purchase or legal ownership of a real star. Instead, each donation symbolizes a commitment to supporting our planetarium’s future.
  2. Star Reservation Period: Your selected star will be reserved in your name (or dedicated name) for a minimum of one year. At the end of this period, you may be invited to renew your donation. If you choose not to renew, your star may be made available for other donors.
  3. Use of Funds: All donations go directly toward the Shiras Planetarium renovation project, including the installation of a state-of-the-art ZEISS VELVET DUO projection system, ChromaCove lighting, Funktus seating, sound system enhancements, and building upgrades to support the facility. This comprehensive project will transform our planetarium into a premier destination for astronomy education and community engagement. And additional funds raised will go to an endowment fund to ensure the long term sustainability of the planetarium.
  4. Digital Certificates: Each donor will receive a personalized digital certificate of appreciation, commemorating their selected star. These certificates are for personal display and celebration of your support.
  5. Recognition: Based on your donation tier, you may receive recognition on our website, in the planetarium itself, or at special events. Details on recognition benefits are outlined in each tier description.
  6. Donor Notification: Each month, the Marquette Education Foundation will notify the Shiras Planetarium of donations received. We will then reach out to donors with instructions on star selection and further program details.
  7. Tax Deductibility: Donations made through the Marquette Education Foundation may be tax-deductible. Please consult with your tax advisor to determine if your donation is eligible for a deduction.
  8. Limited Star Selection: Stars within each tier are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Our team will guide you through the selection process to ensure you find the perfect star.
  9. Acknowledgment Ceremony: Select donors will be honored at our re-opening ceremony, where we will publicly recognize the contributions that have helped transform the Shiras Planetarium.
  10. Terms Subject to Change: The Shiras Planetarium reserves the right to update or modify the program terms and benefits as needed to maintain the integrity and impact of the Adopt a Star program.
